Numerical investigation on the effect of scouring on the structural behaviour of corrugated steel culvert

Chung, Dennis Ming Tak (2018) Numerical investigation on the effect of scouring on the structural behaviour of corrugated steel culvert. [USQ Project]

Abstract

First introduced in 1896, the corrugated steel culvert/pipe continues to be used due to its low up-front and total life-cycle costs that combine with strength, lightweight, adaptability and flexibility make it an obvious choice for many projects. While the design service life of a corrugated steel culvert is usually expected to be 100 years, many have failed before their service lives due to scouring (abrasion) which causes the protective layers of the culvert to dissolve, leaving behind the bare steel material and corrosion starts to form. And it’s at this stage of the buried culvert that this project is interested in.

The aim of this project is to use finite element modelling method to study the structural behaviour of the corrugated steel culvert when under a scouring/corrosion condition and subjected to one or more different parameters, such as different scouring/corrosion level at different locations within the culvert, different flow profiles, different asphalt thickness (road surface), and different modulus of elasticity value to the existing soil.

By creating different testing models in Strand7, it was found that the existing structural conditions of the culvert do have a direct effect on the behaviour of the culvert. And the same findings were also true in the different asphalt thickness and different modulus of elasticity value to the existing soil cases.

But the most surprising finding was the fact that the different velocities of the flow going through the culvert had little to no effects on the structural behaviour, whereas, the depth of the flow had a major impact.
