Testing and Investigating the Angular Accuracy and Efficiency of the Trimble SX10 Camera Pointing System

Fredericks, Beau (2018) Testing and Investigating the Angular Accuracy and Efficiency of the Trimble SX10 Camera Pointing System. [USQ Project]

Abstract

The following is a project to determine the accuracy and effectiveness of aiming to targets using the integrated camera system of the Trimble SX10, a scanning total station released in October 2016. A review of the current literature showed there is little material and no analysis related to the accuracy and effectiveness of the camera pointing system. Compared to the industry's staple of a sighting telescope, the unique camera system was a necessary change that enabled engineers to increase its scanning rate as a scanning total station. To evaluate the camera pointing system in this project, field tests involving comparisons to a comparable telescope based total station were undertaken. These tests were based on methods in the ISO 17123-3 standard, which describes field procedures for testing theodolites.

This project successfully determined the accuracy of the SX10 camera pointing system and compared it in varying conditions along with evaluation of its effectiveness. While there are limitations in the findings due to field procedures utilising a single observer, a single SX10 and one comparison instrument, the robustness of the field procedures and calculations were able to give some confidence in determining the abilities of the SX10. While the SX10 camera system was found to be slower than using a telescope for manual target aiming, it was found to be similar in accuracy and perhaps more precise than when using a telescope.
