Smart parking systems are systems designed to improve the efficiency of finding a car park. Regional universities typically have considerable parking infrastructure spread around the university campus. At USQ specifically, these car parks are often nearing capacity. A smart parking system in the form of a parking guidance and information system can be designed to alleviate this issue.

This project investigates the field of smart parking systems, identifying the technologies used in these systems and potential issues and considerations for smart parking systems. Parking data is obtained from USQ and analysis of this data indicates that a parking guidance and information system could be viable for improving car park efficiency.

A review of smart parking systems technology is presented and assesses the technology in relation to several identified criteria. Technology is selected according to these criteria to select the best technology for this system.

An analysis of the parking infrastructure at USQ is performed to identify potential issues in the parking area that may affect the operation of the smart parking system. Potential solutions to these issues are identified and are selected in accordance with the outlined system objectives.

A design for a guidance system was proposed, however further work is required in this area to identify an optimal solution.

From several conceptual designs, a final best design is selected. A preliminary cost benefit analysis is performed on this design and suggests that the system would be financially viable if implemented.
