Abstract

This project was chosen with the intention of designing a crane for a client to suit his needs, and refining the design further. The specifications of the crane were provided by the client and the design process for this project was dependent on the specifications. The client’s recommendations were also taken into account.

The client owns a metal fabrication business and wanted to increase productivity to expand the business. A crane would allow him to deliver items to clients directly, and enabling him to unload the items for his clients. This would not be possible without a crane as some clients do not have access to any lifting aids such as winches or hoists. The crane was to be constructed by the client himself.

The project focused mainly on Finite Element Analysis (FEA), with models being made using PTC Creo Parametric and analysed in Creo Simulate. Initial testing was done using common beam sections followed by initial designs. The designs were analysed using FEA software, and their displacements and stresses recorded. The designs were then refined based on the analyses conducted until a final design was chosen. All the designs had to comply with the relevant standards and design rules such complying with height restrictions.

The final design was tested for its ability to withstand a variety of loads and conditions. Relevant documentation was collected to enable the client to construct the crane in the future. Screenshots of the FEA results are included to provide the client with information regarding the locations of high stresses where additional care should be taken when manufacturing the crane. The materials for each component were also specified to enable a cost analysis to be conducted.
