Estimating the State of Charge of the Nickel Iron Battery

Parry, Ian Bruce (2017) Estimating the State of Charge of the Nickel Iron Battery. [USQ Project]

Abstract

Nickel-Iron batteies are an environmentally considerate alternative to batteries using other chemistries, especially for off-grid power storage.

To improve this battery’s usefulness, a method of accurately determining its state of charge is required.

In previous studies undertaken by others using the Nickel-Metal Hydride battery it was shown that, by extracting model parameters from a steady state charge/discharge curve of that battery, it is possible to simulate accurately the dynamic behaviour of the battery. This study attempts to apply the same modelling method to the Nickel-Iron battery.

To extract the required parameters to model a battery by simulation requires a thorough knowledge of electrochemistry. Thus, the chemical processes involved in the Nickel-Iron battery are also explored in this study.
