Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) concept connects everything to the internet to sense the physical environment, control ‘things’ and gather data.
This project investigates remote sensing, long range radio technology and the IoT to solve an issue Origin Energy is having accessing their assets on privately owned rural properties.
Origin Energy currently performs production operations in the Surat Basin, Queensland. These operations involve gathering and pipeline assets located on privately owned rural properties, which need to be accessed for routine activities. Many gates on these properties are left in the incorrect state, either open when they should be closed or closed when they should be open, and this results in cattle being unintentionally restricted or freed. The impact on Origin Energy includes compensation payouts to land holders to repay mustering costs and the like as well as damaged relationships with landowners. Origin Energy requires a solution to remotely monitor the state of these gates so operations staff can proactively reduce these incidents.
The methodology used for the project was to identify possible solutions and technologies available, develop a system to sense the gate, utilise long range wireless technology to transport the sensed data and build an application to allow the data to be made useful. The system was then tested to confirm the system operation and identify any areas for improvement.
The system uses an electronic compass to sense the gate and LoRa radio technology to communicate between the gate end node and the network gateway using a standard Internet of Things topology. Field testing confirmed that this can be feasibly achieved up to a range of 15kilometers. With the use of a high gain antenna this was extended out to 26 kilometres.
Further work is required to strengthen the reliability of the data transmission with some error checking and acknowledgement tasks and to also improve the application to allow users to view and utilise the data effectively.
