Lifecycle costs and maintenance of gross pollutant traps for rural local government areas

Gibbons, Benjamin (2017) Lifecycle costs and maintenance of gross pollutant traps for rural local government areas. [USQ Project]

Abstract

Stormwater Management practices such as Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) have been well established in urban areas and have been tried and tested for many years. For Rural Councils that have not had extensive exposure to these practices it can be difficult to make management decisions on the most appropriate water quality devices to accept for new developments. Small Rural Councils that are being exposed to unprecedented high levels of development require some method to determine the lifecycle costs and maintenance of various water quality devices. Proper determination of lifecycle costs assist Councils in determining maintenance budgets for newly acquired assets.

Gross Pollutant Traps (GPTs) have a wide use in standalone and integrated water quality management systems where a range of different devices are used to achieve water quality. Gross pollutant traps may provide similar pollutant control outcomes however, maintenance and lifecycle costs may differ between devices. An investigation it the lifecycle costs and maintenance requirements should provide smaller Councils with information need to make an informed decision into the devices they should specify or accept.

The research project is to research the performance of gross pollutant traps based on current research and case studies to determine the maintenance required to keep the devices performing. A maintenance schedule can be determined and the lifecycle costs and maintenance strategies can be formulated. This information could be used by Council to determine budgets, assets maintenance schedules, and possibly developer contributions to ensure appropriate levels of maintenance are sustainable.
