Finite element simulation of a Sustainable Hybrid Sandwich Panel under bending using Strand7

Maguire, Brett (2017) Finite element simulation of a Sustainable Hybrid Sandwich Panel under bending using Strand7. [USQ Project]

Abstract

There is a driving need to use more sustainable materials during construction whilst being affordable, have solid performance and be being to assemble. Sandwich panels are increasingly being used in residential and industrial buildings and with refrigeration and aeronautical structures. They are popular due to their light weight, good thermal performance and combined strength under bending

This project modelled and analysed a control panel, as well as an intermediate layer of jute, hemp and MDF panels under flexural loading using Strand7. Strand7 is an analysis program that can model and obtain a failure load of the panels. The aim was to introduce an intermediate layer between the EPS core and the aluminium face sheet to reduce the substantial step in stress between the core the face sheet of the panel. Understanding the behaviour of adhesive and the role it had in determining the failure load for each of the panels. To achieve this, a modified Drucker’s Prager equation was used to evaluate the linear and cap plasticity values of adhesive.

The addition of the intermediate layers to the panels has improved the load capabilities of the sandwich panels compared to the control panel. The results from Strand7 showed that for the medium panels, the panel with a jute intermediate layer performed the best compared to the control and hemp panels. For the large panels it was the panel with the MDF that performed better than the control and Jute panels.

By the addition of the adhesive layer as a bonding layer the analysis was able to predict the failure load for each of the panels which was close to what the experiment test undertaken by Jauhar Fajrin established. Further work on this topic could be to undertake a parametric study to optimise the hybrid sandwich panel design.
