Investigation into ICSM’s guideline for conventional traverse surveys

Haskard, Rhys (2017) Investigation into ICSM’s guideline for conventional traverse surveys. [USQ Project]

Abstract

ICSM’s (Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping) guideline for conventional traverse surveys illustrates traverse surveying procedures to endorse the implementation of consistent traverse survey methods to allow a high level of accuracy and reliability in Australia’s survey control network.

The aim of this research project is to investigate ICSM’s guideline for conventional traverse surveys and observe any areas that it could be improved or better defined. The aspects of this document that are identified as possible areas for improvement or that could be better defined have undergone field testing to justify any additions or amendments.

The two main areas of concern found in ICSM’s guideline were the prism centring accuracy and the number of sets of angles to be read. It is considered that the prism centring accuracy would be better described as an angular offset reduced to a distance contradicting ICSM’s guideline. Also the number of set of angles also seems to be under some conjecture with three different sources of research giving difference values. From the research found, only one resource had actually investigated the effect this had on accuracy and reported on it.

These two areas have been investigated, researched and experimented with producing results that have been utilised in the creation of a revised guideline for conventional traverse surveys.
