Abstract

Diesel engines or compression ignition (CI) engines provide efficient fuel conversions, high durability, and non-complex operations which make them popular power stations for agriculture, transportation, and automobile industry. The fast diminution of fossil fuel reserves and increasing contamination of the environment have urged the researchers to hunt alternate fuels for the replacement of fossil fuels. The present study is a comparison study to examine the effect of biodiesel on performance, emissions, and spray pattern characteristics of a four-stroke, single-cylinder, CI engine. Five different fuel samples namely, diesel, B20, DP5 (Diesel and Pentane 5), DDMF (Diesel and Dimethylfuran), BDMF (B20 and Dimethylfuran) that have been tested by others were used to do the comparison study. As every student work is limited to a few biofuels, therefore, this work aimed to compare and analyze the results for finding the best fuel to be used in the engine. The results of the analysis showed that the use of biodiesel influence the performance and emissions parameters of CI engine significantly. In performance parameters, maximum values for brake torque (BT), brake power (BP), and brake thermal efficiency (BTE) with minimum brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) were obtained with DP5. The fuel samples with dimethylfuran percentage showed a deteriorated performance as compared to conventional diesel fuel. In terms of emissions characteristic, the use of biodiesel in diesel reduced the emissions production significantly. The minimum values of UHC, CO, CO2, and NOx emissions were obtained with DDMF and BDMF. On the other hand, the oxygen emissions were found to be minimum for conventional diesel. In terms of spray characteristics, the spray cone angle and spray area for biodiesel were found to be higher as compared to conventional diesel fuel. It was due to the high viscosity and density of biodiesel. On the other hand, the spray tip penetration was greater for diesel fuel due to its low values of intrinsic properties. The high spray penetration and spray area are expected to improve the performance and reduce the emissions characteristics of CI engine.
