Crusher Dust as Man Sand Replacement of Natural Sand

Prasad, Nirbhay (2019) Crusher Dust as Man Sand Replacement of Natural Sand. [USQ Project]

Abstract

Concrete is the second most used man made product in the world. Concrete is a pourable mixture of aggregates, cementitious binders, additives and water. Natural sand plays a very important part in concrete components and achieving the desired outcome. Due to exponential demand in concrete and aggregate products has resulted in depletion sources of natural sand around Victoria and Australia at large. This paper provides a good understanding of properties of manufactured sand and improved uses for a sustainable development of Victoria. Exponential demand and excessive sand mining has been causing a lot of environmental damages soil erosion, drying of underground aquifers, air pollution, noise and worst of all filling up landfills. Man sand is nothing new to the construction industry. Countries like India, China, America and more European countries and been using for past decades.

In situations like storage of natural sand, cost and environmental factors Quarry dust also known as Crusher dust and newly named as Man sand in an economic alternative to natural sand. Crusher dust (man sand) can be define as by product of coarse aggregate production. Use of crusher dust as a man sand aggregate in concrete draws serious attention of researchers and investigators.

This paper presents the feasibility of the usage of Man sand as hundred percent substitutes for Natural Sand in 50MPa structural grade concrete. Mix design has been developed for N50MPa using design an approach Australian Standard for both conventional concrete and man sand concrete. Tests were conducted 100 x200 cylinders, beams, prisms to study the strength, shrinkage, permeability, surface resistivity, of concrete made of Man sand and the results were compared with the Natural Sand Concrete. Surface resistivity and apparent volume of permeable voids as durability check for both man sand concrete and natural sand concrete. More over the paper gives benefits of recycling crusher dust as man sand for concrete production. This proposal also reviews works of others, identifies gaps and develops further. It found that man sand can be used as 100% replacement of natural sand.
