Abstract

Arsenic tainted water supplies in Bangladesh, threatens the health of large numbers of people. Due to cost and/or technical constraints, current technologies will not be able to supply clean water to these people in time to save them from immense suffering and/or death.

This project was primarily concerned with advancing solar distillation technology to a point where it might be used to supply water to small groups/households in areas in Bangladesh and elsewhere.

The project found that plastics can be modified to improve the wetting characteristics and hence the efficiency of units using plastic as a condenser cover, rather than the traditional glass. Research indicated that permanent modification of plastic surfaces is available; sourcing of these plastics would allow the next stage of this project to progress to a final design for thin film solar distillation with a plastic condenser.

The use of a cloth feeder as the input supply and evaporation surface was found to work, although flow variation was created, when temperature and/or salinity of the input supply were varied.

Further studies are required to advance solar distillation to the point where plastic condensers and the design used within this paper could be used to supply water to those people in need.
