Investigating Poultry manure for sequestration of nutrients, carbon char and energy recovery

Bejjam, Akash Raju (2017) Investigating Poultry manure for sequestration of nutrients, carbon char and energy recovery. [USQ Project]

Abstract

In the poultry production industry for both meat and egg birds, the use and disposal of the waste manure and/or bedding material remains problematic in the potential transfer of both toxins and pathogens to the environment. This waste utilization could become a significant approach for energy production or other sterile carbon materials in this industry. In this thesis, the main emphasis was on the production wastes, which are typically stockpiled around all the poultry facilities. The investigation was undertaken to minimize the poultry manure waste environmental impact by utilizing the waste as possible crop nutrient or whether useful hydrocarbons could be produced for the purpose of energy production. Free range bird manure and cage bird manure were analysed to investigate the chemical characteristics present in the manures for utilization as a good crop fertilizer. The investigation then proceeds to see if hydrothermal treatment of the poultry waste bio-matter can produce 3 sterile organic carbon using these products either for soil emollients or for energy recovery. Low temperature hydrothermal sealed micro-reactor treatment was undertaken at the temperature range of 170°C-180°C and pressure rate of 27 BAR - 46 BAR. Liquid ion chromatography and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used to analyse the chemical characters and heavy metals present in the manures. Total carbon analysis was used to evaluate the total organic carbon, inorganic carbon and total carbon present in the manures. Carbon and nitrogen analyser and gas chromatography was utilized to investigate the carbon content, nitrogen ratio and hydrocarbons present in the manures and hydrothermal materials are produced from these processes.
