Tanner, Monique (2024) Ranking Up or Burning Out? The Role of Coping Strategies in Competitive Esports Athletes. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Recent research has explored stress, coping, and burnout in esports, drawing comparisons to other competitive domains, such as traditional sports. This increased attention highlights the growing recognition of the implication’s burnout has for the well-being of athletes. The current study examined rank, problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and avoidance coping as predictors of burnout. Further, it examined if the use of coping strategies would moderate the relationship between rank and burnout. Participants (N = 448) were esports athletes who played one of seven popular team-based esports and were above the 60th percentile for performance in their specific esports. Participants completed the Coping Functions Questionnaire to assess problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance coping and the Athlete Burnout Scale to assess burnout. A moderation analysis was conducted and found that avoidance coping was the only direct predictor of burnout, with higher scores of avoidance coping being associated with higher burnout scores. However, problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance coping did not moderate the relationship between rank and burnout. In the emerging domain of esports research, the current study suggests that avoidance coping may negatively influence burnout in esports athletes, similar to findings in other high-performing and competitive roles.
