Turipa, Quinn Philip (2024) Investigation of High Temperature Liquid Bridge Plugs for Well Integrity. [USQ Project]
Abstract
In the critical landscape of oil and gas well integrity, the robustness of downhole isolation methods is paramount for ensuring safety, environmental protection, and asset preservation. This research delves into the evaluation of high-temperature Liquid Bridge Plugs (LBPs) as viable substitutes for mechanical, and cement bridge plugs in the challenging conditions of Australia's Cooper Basin. Traditional LBPs, currently rated for a maximum of 300°F, fall short of some of the Basin's elevated downhole temperatures, which can reach up to 400°F. This study aims to bridge this gap by assessing the performance of LBPs in temperatures exceeding 300°F and scrutinising the advantages and limitations of non-mechanical versus mechanical isolation devices in terms of cost-effectiveness, environmental impact, and operational feasibility.
This project will involve a comprehensive modelling analysis to gauge the temperature endurance of LBPs, an evaluation through three onshore well trials, and a comparative analysis with conventional mechanical solutions. The expectation is to identify materials with enhanced thermal resistance and to discern the fatigue behaviour of LBPs in extreme conditions. Recommendations will be put forth for the deployment of LBPs within the Cooper Basin, potentially adjusting well integrity approaches for industry. By pushing the boundaries of existing well barrier technology, this research aspires to offer a proactive strategy for well integrity management, thus mitigating risks and improving the infrastructure of Australia's energy sector.
