Abstract
The Purpose of this research is to create a useful CFD model that can calculate performance metrics of a kayak, across a wide range of relevant conditions. First a literature review was conducted, to gain both, a better understanding of relevant theory, as well as to identify the existing research. This allowed for the development of an effective methodology, which would yield results, that where both accurate and useful, filling gaps in the existing knowledge base. The chosen methodology comprised of three major steps, firstly appropriately modelling the relevant geometry, then developing an appropriate multiphase volume of a fluid flatwater simulation, before finally testing at an array of various flow speeds and direction. The resulting data was found to be representative of the expected trends, however showed limited accuracy at flow rates with a magnitude of 15 m/s or higher. Finally, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model, examples were given outlining its usefulness as both, a race strategy and rapid design analysis tool.
