Rostamlou, Masoumeh (2017) Incorporating an Economical Solar-Battery Energy System for a Typical Waste Water Treatment Plant. Research Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) include processes to remove pollutants from the waste water. Waste water treatment energy mostly relies on fossil fuel resources and its processing stages are major contributors to energy usage. Considering limited supply and costly fuel resources and their negative impacts to the environment, the usage of various renewable resources has significantly increased. To ensure the project environmental objectives, councils and utilities are investing on the innovative and sustainable renewable resources to generate energy for WWTPs. Solar energy is one type of renewable energy which originates directly from the sun and it is available in abundance. Australia has the potential for solar energy generation due to high levels of solar irradiation. Addition of PV solar system to the WWTP power configuration, will provide an opportunity to enhance WWTP sustainability and achieve the major renewable energy milestones in Australia. The objective is to study on optimal and economic incorporation of solar battery system in WWTP power supply system. Moreover, it examines the potential application of biogas micro-turbine (Genset) as an alternative renewable energy source instead of back up diesel generator. This report includes energy audits and demand side management (DSM) to increase energy efficiency and reduce costs. Recommendations will be proposed to enhance WWTP performance and optimize energy generation to supply plant power demand.
