Chandan, Nithyendra (2017) Optimization of nano-structured gratings for enhanced light absorption in metal semiconductor-metal photo-detectors. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
This project essentially deals on how to get the maximum light absorption and reflection of Nano-grating assisted metal-semiconductor-metal-photodetectors. I used Finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique to simulate and calculate the light absorption enhancement factor (LAEF) of Nano grating Metal-Semiconductor-metal-photodetectors by changing the structure of the Nano gratings geometrically, in this research the various Nano grating shapes are hyperbolic, trapezoidal, triangular and rectangular. The enhancement is endorsed to the coupling of the surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) with the incident light and this research supports the development of high responsivity, high sensitivity, low bias, high speed MSM PDs. To make best use of the light absorption using plasmonic special effects, the metal fingers of MSM-PDs will be imprinted with suitable depths. The simulation outcome has proved by comparing to usual photo detectors the elevated electric field will be obtained which leads to improvement in light absorption. The finer absorption has been obtained since the capability of the embedded metallic Nano particles in absorbing the light and scattering properties by electrons conduction using simulated resonance light from metallic Nano particles. The simulation outcome will prove that which design of Nano grating assisted metal-semiconductor-metal-photodetectors gives a maximum light absorption and reflection.
