Abstract

Coal handling has been an integral part of the mining since the invention of coal. Ample amount of work has already been done on developing the reclaiming systems that are used to retrieve the material from a stockpile. Currently used systems are quite expensive and have some loopholes. So, there is a need to design a new coal reclaiming system. The proposed system is somewhat similar to a bucket wheel reclaimer but has made cheaper and small in size. The cost reduction in the proposed system will assist the use of multiple reclaimers even for a medium coal handling plant and thereby, will help in continuous production and material flow. The production loss due to system failure and maintenance are the major issues faced by a coal handling plant.

In this project, a new reclaiming system was designed by using the impellers to eliminate the wheel of a bucket-wheel reclaimer. The main aim of the research was to check the viability of such a system and optimization of the design geometry. The viability was proved by performing an analysis on Rocky-DEM (Discrete Element Method) to determine the loads on impellers and frame of reclaimer. The ANSYS-FEA (Finite Element Analysis) was used to perform various analysis viz. static structural, transient structural and modal analysis. Design optimization was done to achieve a final value of 215 MPa as the highest equivalent (Von-Mises) stress and 1.7mm as the maximum total deflection. The results are presented and the areas under high values of stress, strain and deflection are outlined. A section on future work outlining the important recommendations has been shown at the end of the report.
