Abstract

An ongoing investigation of the effectiveness of 500mg of Caralluma fimbriata extract (CFE) on cortisol, stress, anxiety and impaired quality sleep experienced by adults living in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Previous research with the same design conducted in 2019 found 1 gram of CFE had no known harmful side effects and was a means of lowering cortisol and reducing the symptoms of stress in a sample of adults taken from the same population. This current study is a double blind, placebo controlled, randomised clinical trial that commenced in October 2021 and will conclude in October 2023. In October 2022 the double blinding prevents the researcher from being able to inform the writer of this report which group is receiving placebo and which is receiving the intervention product, CFE. Consequently, no hypotheses testing was possible. The preliminary results, using the Mann Whitney U test, show no change on any of the outcome measures between the 14 participants in group 1 and the 12 participants in group 2. The negative responses to the research questions may change after October 2023 when a larger sample size and the lifting of the blinding enables more in-depth analysis.
