Archay, Melissa (2015) Revising Rey’s Verbal Tests. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The present study aimed to translate and revise two verbal tests developed by the internationally respected Swiss psychologist, Andre Rey to measure semantic memory, abstract reasoning and concept formation. The tests were translated from French into English and items were updated to reflect more cultural relevance and to lessen educational bias. The revised tests, the Three Word Test (TWT) and the Word Elimination Test (WET) also adopted a different administration procedure by removing all time limits on the two original measures. The tests formed part of a battery of commonly used tests of verbal abilities that were administered to a normal sample of 23 males and 40 females aged between 18 and 60 years with educational backgrounds of 12 - 24 years. Contrary to expectations, principal components analysis revealed that both tests were measures of word knowledge rather than verbal abstract reasoning. With the removal of redundant items, the TWT and WET were shortened with improved internal consistencies of α = .78, and α = .64, respectively. No effects of gender, age, or education were found for the WET, but an interaction of age and gender was found for the TWT. Further research will be required to substantiate this effect with larger and more educationally diverse samples as well as to expand the normative data to permit the use of the tests across different clinical settings.
