Abstract

It is anticipated that Australia will witness a significant shortfall of people with
undergraduate qualifications by 2018. In view of attrition rates among first year tertiary
students it is crucial this cohort be better engaged to reverse the current trend. Whilst
Problem-Solving Appraisal has been associated with several student outcomes, to date
it has not been linked with Student Engagement. Given Positive Affect has been
associated with these student measures this study assessed what influence positive
affect had on the relationship between problem-solving appraisal, and student
engagement and the impact gender imposed. First year Australian university students
(N = 198, male = 42, female = 156) were recruited and assessed using the Positive
Affect Negative Affect Scale, the Problem-Solving Inventory and the Student Well-
Being Questionnaire. Utilising a cross-sectional design, correlational analysis, and
structural equation modelling, it was demonstrated that positive affect partially
mediated the relationship between problem-solving appraisal and student engagement
for females and fully mediated the relationship for males. Given the gender
differential, implications for the findings were discussed in relation to maximising
enjoyment when implementing psychological and educational programs for males.
