Mindfulness as a Mediator between Perfectionism and Anxiety

Abstract

A search of the literature identified that there has been little research into mindfulness as a mediator between perfectionism and anxiety in a non- clinical setting. The present study will review theory and current empirical support with regard to perfectionism, mindfulness and anxiety. The 348 participants for the present study were drawn from the general population and the student pool. Participants were aged from 18 to 65, were predominantly female and 96% identified English as their first language. Perfectionism, mindfulness and anxiety were measured using self report instruments in a computer administered format. Regression analyses found that mindfulness partially mediated between perfectionism and anxiety. The percentage of variance in anxiety for which perfectionism accounted decreased from 17% to 13% (p < .001) with mindfulness in the role of partial mediator. Further exploratory analyses indicated that the nonjudgmental aspect of mindfulness was the main contributor to this mediating effect. When nonjudgmental accounted for a unique 4% (p < .001) of the variance in anxiety perfectionism accounted for only approximately 6% (p < .001) of the variance in anxiety, compared to the 12% contribution of perfectionism without nonjudgmental. It was concluded that evidence supports the partial mediating effect of mindfulness on the relationship between perfectionism and anxiety Recommendations are made for the directions of future research.
