Practitioner Experiences and Beliefs of Positive Behaviour Support: An Australian Perspective

Ball, Alexis R. (2022) Practitioner Experiences and Beliefs of Positive Behaviour Support: An Australian Perspective. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

Individuals with a physical, mental, and or behavioural disability are at an increased risk of engaging in challenging behaviours. Positive behaviour support is used to support individuals with these behaviours, however, there is a paucity of research on practitioner perspectives of behaviour support in Australia. The purpose of the current study was to explore Australian practitioners’ beliefs and experiences of engaging in positive behaviour support. The study aimed to determine whether there were significant differences in beliefs and experiences between practitioners who differed in their behaviour support roles, qualifications, caseloads, and clinical experience. A total of fifty Behaviour Support Practitioners completed the Practitioners’ Beliefs and Experiences of Behaviour Support survey. Results indicated a significant difference in university preparation and confidence levels and no significant difference in team engagement. Contrary to predictions, there were no significant differences in in-service preparation, perception of resource availability, and beliefs about challenging behaviours and PBS. The findings extend the PBS literature and offer new perspectives of the Australian disability sector.
