Barclay-Timmis, Victoria (2012) Exploration of the relationship between the traumatic impact of childhood abuse or neglect for an individual, their perception of attachment to their own parents, and the behavioural and emotional difficulties exhibited by their children. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Despite a wealth of research in the field of childhood trauma and attachment, there has yet to be a study that specifically analyses the complex relationships between the traumatic impact of childhood abuse or neglect, perceived attachment to parents, and the potential impacts for the children of survivors of childhood abuse or neglect. This study aimed to advance the exploration of these interrelated and complex relationships, and following a review of the literature a model was presented for statistical testing whereby the relationship between impact of trauma for an individual and their perception of their eldest child's behavioural and emotional difficulties was medicated by perceived attachment to their own parents. One hundred and sixty three adult survivors of childhood abuse (93 % female), registered with the organisation Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse, responded to the invitation to participate in an on-line web survey comprising three self-report questionnaires: the Impact of Events Scale (Revised), Parental Bonding Instrument, and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Results did not support the proposed model of mediation but did reveal a direct relationship between the impact of trauma on an individual and the emotional and behavioural difficulties of their eldest offspring. Suggestions for further research include larger studies on a more representative sample to test the generalisability of results.
