Abstract

Fathers play an essential role in the psychological, social and emotional wellbeing of children. However, minimal research has focused on factors associated with father involvement in child rearing. Further, maternal gatekeeping appears negatively associated with father involvement, yet it remains unclear whether this may be impacted by moderators, such as co-parenting conflict. The present study aimed to assess the moderating role of co-parenting conflict on the relationship between maternal gate-keeping and father involvement. It was hypothesised that greater maternal gate-closing and more significant relationship conflict would each predict lower father involvement and that the negative impact of gate-closing on father involvement would be more pronounced at higher levels of relationship conflict. Participants were fathers aged over 18 years and in a relationship with the birth-mother of their children aged between two and 12 years. Through regression analyses, it was revealed that maternal gate-closing, maternal gateopening, and disagreements about the child were together unable to explain differences in father involvement. Furthermore, the interaction between maternal gate-keeping and conflict about the child was not significant. While this research suggests that other factors may be the primary determinants of father involvement, future studies should explore these associations in outpatient populations and alternative demographics.
