Bennett, Tiffany (2017) The Interrelationships of Psychological Capital in Predicting Happiness. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
In today’s fast paced, knowledge driven and often unpredictable workplace, an organisation’s human capital, performance and related happiness has increasingly become of interest to researchers and human resource professionals. Psychological capital (PsyCap) is a now well-established construct used to measure the psychological resources that are thought to predict workplace happiness and well-being. However, to date there has been little attention given to the interrelationships of the construct variables, hope, optimism, selfefficacy and resilience. To address this issue, the present study explored a hypothesised model of PsyCap variable interrelationships on a sample of Australian workers (N = 183) to assess the pathways within the proposed happiness model. The findings of the present study, while preliminary, suggest that PsyCap may have defined pathways that lead to workplace happiness, and provide us with an understanding that to date the current literature has not investigated, of how the variables of PsyCap interrelate chronologically to predict desirable outcomes. Moreover, the findings suggest that PsyCap can be implemented in stages, and each stage has an additive effect on the outcome, in this case the measurement of workplace happiness. Future recommendations for further research, and potential implementations for workplace happiness conclude the article.
