Abstract

Attrition rates of university students in Australia are on the rise, these rates of increase are proportionally driven by financial needs of students and the resource scarcity of time and space to be able to study while earning an income to survive. How students effectively establish boundaries between their respective domains is a growing area, however a deeper look at the mechanisms that facilitate boundary transition is the focus of this study. A longitudinal study of 215 students from two Australian universities spanning two years was conducted as the basis of data for this work, and this work asks ‘When mediated by flexibility, which Domain Congruence, University Domain or Occupational Domain, plays a greater role in Student Engagement over time? And does an increase in Domain Congruence lead to a decrease in Burnout?’ From these four hypotheses were developed to further understand the relationship between the occupational domain, the university domain and the flexibility constructs that exist to manage the domain boundaries. The results indicated that significant relationships between variables begin to develop in T2 and that the effects on student engagement may come from an internal process compared with an external influence. As well as the university domain showing to have the most influential relationship with both student engagement and student burnout.
