Abstract
This study aimed to examine the influence of data collection methodologies on category norms by comparing norms collected using a single and multiple response method. It was hypothesised that for most categories the single and multiple response data collection methodologies would produce similar category norms. Categories norms were collected using the multiple response method from 39 individuals and was compared to archival data from 1399 individuals who had previously provided category norms using the single response method to ascertain if both groups provided similar responses. The data were analysed by conducting individual Chi-Square Goodness of Fit tests on each of the 61 categories, with Cramer’s V used to measure effect sizes. The hypothesis was supported with 36 (59%) of categories having the same or similar responses across both methods. The importance of examining the results of each individual category in evaluating if the responses are equivalent is discussed. Consideration is given to the influence of statistical analysis in examining differences in responses. Additionally, the administrative efficiency of the single response method in collecting category norms that are reflective of the characteristics of normative data is acknowledged. The present study is limited by convenience sampling and also that the single response method was only compared with the timed multiple response method. Future research would benefit from regularly collecting category norms on a large scale in order to better reflect the general population.
