Cheng, David H. (2019) Exploring the Experiences of Novice Male Secondary Teachers. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
A shortage of male teachers presents as a growing concern particularly within Western countries. In Australia, a number of initiatives and policies have been proposed by the Australian government to increase the recruitment of male applicants to the teaching profession. However, such polices have failed to address issues of early career attrition and effective strategies to retain those beyond their early years. It is widely acknowledged in literature that the first five years of teaching presents as a significant period in determining the continuity or departure of novice teachers. Many novice teachers at risk of leaving express strong dissatisfaction with their job and work environment. Research into this problem has predominately been investigated elsewhere with a lack of comprehensive research within an Australian context. This qualitative study explores the experiences of novice male secondary teachers teaching in South East Queensland, Australia. A novice teacher was defined as someone with 5 years or fewer in the teaching profession. Data was audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Four themes emerged from the early experiences of secondary male teachers: (1) Prior Lived Experience; (2) Working with Teenagers; (3) Professional Relationships, and (4) Professional Development. Findings from this exploratory study may provide valuable information contributing to the current knowledge base and inform future research in providing ways to best prepare, support and retain those entering the teaching profession.
