Abstract
A global survey in 2021 recognised one in seven adolescents aged between 10 to 19 years old experienced a mental health disorder. Early detection via screening and intervention for mental health disorders can provide increased success rate for treatment which consequently reduces the severity of mental health disorders in early to late adulthood. Current professional screening measures for adolescents include professional administration, scoring and reporting of results is often costly for families. This research is an extension of the already validated Interactive Child Distress Screener. The development of the Interactive Distress Screener – Youth (IDS-Y; aged 11-16 years) was guided by the Basic Emotion Theory, Scale Development theory and Co-design methodologies. The IDS-Y is a self-reported emotional and behavioural distress screening tool that consists of 15 individual animations portraying targeted emotional and behavioural constructs. This study utilised an online survey platform to collect data from 149 adolescents on each of the animated assessment items to examine accuracy and acceptability. Participants were recruited via social media, research team networks, and snowballing techniques. Acceptability and accuracy results were analysed through quantitative content analysis. Results reported no relationship detected between the age of the adolescent and their survey preference. Furthermore, most items of the IDS-Y were deemed unacceptable, and all items were inaccurate. While the acceptability and accuracy results were unfavourable, the study highlighted adolescent preference for an animated screening tool. Suggested refinements around character, colour and sound will be needed for each item for future application of the IDS-Y.
