Cochrane, Michela (2019) Conversation Analysis of a Prescription Report in Brief System Therapy. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Conversation analysis research of psychotherapy has the potential to provide an insight into the nature of psychotherapy processes, however this potential has been obscured by the gap between the sophistication of transcriptions method and psychological constructs. Academic needs were prioritised over clinician-client needs. This exploratory case study investigates how reversing the conventional conversation analisys procedure by creating a symbiotic alliance between the researchers and an experienced clinician, Maurizio Viaro would benefit the mental health field and meet both, conversation analysis and psychotherapy, concerns. The method involved the examination of a single case of study of real sessions of systemic strategic therapy talk, which was identified of significant clinical interest by the expert clinician. Prescriptions are examined from the conversation analytic perspective. The relevant data was extracted, translated from Italian into English and transcribed using a light version of Jeffersonian transcription conventions. Four findings were revealed and confirmed that bringing the experienced clinician into the researching team adds an essential value to the project. Additionally, demonstrated how the use of conversation analysis identifies a sequence of action that transforms descriptions of a prescription experience during systemic, strategic therapy including an enquiry, stance, response, and receipt. This study then presents a possible solution to closing the gap between the sophistication of transcriptions method and psychological constructs.
