Conroy, Sean (2009) Making Choices A Meta-Analysis of Goal-Setting in Sport and Exercise. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The most recent published meta-analysis on goal setting in sport and exercise was conducted nearly 15 years ago by Kyllo and Landers (1995). The purpose of the present study was to extend previous meta-analyses to determine the benefits of goal setting in sport and exercise as assessed by self-report measures. A systematic review of existing literature relating to goal setting was conducted and comprehensive meta-analytical techniques were used to combine studies that met the rigorous criteria for inclusion and exclusion. A total of 73 effect sizes from 11 studies involving 1,942 participants were analysed using the random effects model described by Hagger (2006). A small-to moderate overall effect size of .40 was found which suggests that goal setting as assessed by self-report measures is beneficial in the sport and exercise arena. Whilst a number of moderators were tested, such as age and type of goal, results suggested there were no significant differences between levels of moderators and the benefits to goalsetting were equally beneficial. It is suggested that future research focus on the outcome benefits as well as on the interaction of constructs such as gender and age or type of goal. The findings of the current study may prove beneficial for athletes and trainers in the development of performance-based athletic programs.
