Suicide Prevention and Intervention for Males 85-years and Older – a Scoping Review

Abstract

In Australia, suicide rates amongst males are cited as being three times greater than that for females. Deaths by suicide are universally noted to increase in the senior years. Men aged 85 years and older represent the highest suicide risk category at 32.9 deaths per 100,000, thus appropriate prevention and interventions are imperative if mental health outcomes for this population are to improve. Despite the complex nature of late-life suicide, the extant literature tends to centre around epidemiology and aetiology, with limited data addressing the unique needs of geriatric male cohorts in the context of suicidal behaviours. Through Scoping Review methodology, the study aimed to comprehensively explore the current knowledge base relevant to elderly male suicide prevention and intervention, to identify the key concepts, gaps, limitations and emerging evidence. Results highlighted the significance of intervention subcategories and offered support for the inclusion of Practitioner training within multi-faceted prevention models that focus on both the reduction of risk factors and promotion of protective factors. Moreover, preventative measures may result in greater efficacy when tailored to lateelderly age, male gender and specific level of risk. The objective of the proposed research is to inform evidenced based practice and future research endeavours in the development of suicide prevention and intervention programs for late-elderly males aged 85 -years and older.
