Abstract
Mood impacts the way people process information. Despite this, there has been little empirical investigation regarding the development of mood in real time. Mood induction procedures have typically involved the measurement of affect as opposed to the measurement of mood. Pictures have shown to be reliable and valid stimuli for mood induction procedures. This study aims to investigate the development of mood in real time. It does this by developing a methodology inspired by research on ego depletion and that involves the use of pictures. Sixty participants were recruited and randomly allocated to both positive and neutral picture conditions. The use of pictures provided an effective stimulus in the development of positive mood in real time as measured by a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Mood was shown to develop within the first picture set and gradually decrease throughout the remainder of the induction. Hypothesised changes in positive affect PANAS scale scores from pre to post induction were not significant for the positive picture condition. A significant decrease in negative affect PANAS scale scores were found across both conditions. Results also supported evidence that mood and affect hold different characteristics. The Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) was not found to be an adequate measure of mood. This experiment provides a platform for future research on the study of mood.
