Measuring Mindfulness and its Association with Self-Consciousness in a Student Population

Davies, Kerry (2011) Measuring Mindfulness and its Association with Self-Consciousness in a Student Population. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

This research aimed to provide further evidence that mindfulness (a quality of consciousness of present moment attention and awareness) is unrelated to selfconsciousness (the tendency to engage in self-examination) but that some aspects of the multi-faceted concept of mindfulness do have an association with self-consciousness. A self-consciousness measure (the Self-consciousness Scale or SCS) and two mindfulness measures (the single factor Mindfulness Attention and Awareness Scale or MAAS and the multi-faceted Five Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire or FFMQ) were completed by 324 undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students. In general, self-consciousness was not associated with mindfulness. However, correlation and regression analyses found that the observe facet of the FFMQ to be predictive of self-consciousness. This further supports research claiming that some facets of the FFMQ may be a skill developed as a result of mindful practice rather than a measure of mindfulness itself. Finally, it was found that student practitioners of mindfulness scored higher than student non-practitioners on all mindfulness measures.
