Anger and Arthritis Impairment

Abstract

Although the association between anger and arthritis-related impairment has been identified in previous research, minimal exploration has been conducted on the relationship. Results from previous studies have indicated that the influence of anger expression style is related to the level of impairment experienced by chronic pain sufferers. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the contribution of anger was a significant predictor of on arthritic impairments. A sample of 72 female and 18 male arthritis sufferers, aged between 24 and 87 years were required to complete self report measures that included several dimensions of anger and arthritic impairment. A bivariate correlation analysis revealed that a significant association exists between overall arthritic impairment and both trait anger (frequency of experiencing angry feelings) and anger-in (anger that is directed inward/ suppressed anger). A standard multiple regression analysis revealed that only trait anger contributed significantly to the prediction of overall arthritic impairment. Collectively, these results indicated that anger management may be an approach worth exploring to minimise and cope with the effects of arthritic pain. Future directions of study may also investigate the influence of pain severity on the relationship between anger and chronic pain as findings from this study suggest there could be a mediating effect evident between these variables.
