Abstract
Kinesthetic imagery is the imagining of the feeling associated with performance of a physical movement. Little is known about kinesthetic imagery. However, it is argued here that it has similar underlying cognitive processes to visual imagery. Two new measures of kinesthetic imagery, Vividness of Kinesthetic Imagery (VKI) and Control of Kinesthetic Imagery (CKI) were developed and the psychometric properties were examined in Study 1. The results provided tentative evidence for the VKI as a measure of vividness of kinesthetic imagery and the CKI as a measure of control of kinesthetic imagery. Study 2 then used the new measures of kinesthetic imagery to explore the relationships of kinesthetic imagery with visual imagery, Gv, and Gf. Confirmatory factor analytic results demonstrated that kinesthetic imagery could be distinguished from visual imagery, Gv, and Gf. This finding was discussed in relation to a proposed second-order factor of broad kinesthetic ability and the role of kinesthetic imagery ability in cognition and kinesthesis.
