Dunn, Katrina (2013) Adolescent and Young Adult Binge Drinking: The Contribution of Facebook. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
To investigate the influence of social media use on the increasing rates of binge drinking during adolescence and young adulthood, the association between retrospective self-reported quantity, and frequency, of alcohol consumption at two developmental stages (12-17 years and 18-25 years), and alcohol-related content on an online social networking site (Facebook) were examined. In a community sample of 120 adults (aged 17 years 7 months to 56 years 3 months, M = 30.58), a series of MANCOVA revealed that posting or receiving a response to alcohol-related content on Facebook was associated with increased quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption at ages 18-25, while viewing or making a response to alcohol-related content on Facebook was associated with increased quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption at ages 12-17. These findings suggest that peer interactions on social media may influence perceptions of the social norms of binge drinking, contributing to increasing incidences of adolescent and young adult binge drinking. Retrospective reporting of data in the current study means future investigations may more accurately reflect the association between social media use and alcohol consumption by examining current binge drinking and social media usage in an adolescent sample. Keywords: adolescence, binge drinking, social media, social norms
