Comparing Chronological and Subjective Age for Predicting Future Time Perspective

Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to extend the literature on the relationship between FTP and subjective age. Specifically, the study aimed to examine if subjective age was a better predictor of FTP than chronological age for those with chronic joint pain (compared to a control group). Existing research has not examined the relationship between chronic joint pain and FTP or the relationship between subjective age and FTP. The final sample included 111 participants aged 18-68. Participants completed an online survey that assessed demographics, chronological age, subjective age, health factors and the Future Time Perspective Scale. Firstly, the results found that there was a significant negative correlation between FTP and chronological age for the chronic joint pain group, but not for the control group. Secondly, those with chronic joint pain were found to have significantly older subjective ages compared to the control group. Thirdly, subjective age was associated with FTP but only for the chronic joint pain group. Finally, subjective age was found to account for more variance than chronological age in FTP for the chronic joint pain group. Due to several limitations in the study, such as small sample size, the distribution and range of ages amongst both groups and limited variability in demographic variables, results should be interpreted with caution and future studies are needed to confirm results. In conjunction with future research, the findings of the current study could be used to inform further research and interventions.
