Elswyk, Isabella R. (2023) Rurality and Barriers to Successful Treatment in the Queensland Opioid Treatment Program. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
There has been previous research identifying and analysing barriers in opioid substitution treatment, specifically on logistical and perceptual concerns such as cost and
stigmatisation. However, there is a lack of quality and relevant literature exploring how rurality impacts successful Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) treatment. The following study was designed in collaboration with the Darling Downs Alcohol and Other Drugs Service (AODS)
to address this research gap and to determine what effect rurality has on the Queensland Opioid Treatment Program (OTP). The study utilises a sample from the Toowoomba AODS,
collecting perspectives from rural and urban-based consumers. A self-administered Quantitative survey was completed by consumers (n = 55), where information was collected on location and regionality, treatment outcomes, perceptions of the program, stigmatisation received by staff, program retention, motivation to continue treatment, and opinions on known barriers to treatment. The study found that in the sample a consumer’s rurality did not negatively impact their treatment outcomes and did not negatively impact the Queensland OTP. The study did confirm that negative perceptions from consumer's peers were a barrier
to successful treatment and that motivation to continue treatment was significantly positively correlated with treatment outcomes.
