Farr-Dobson, Jesse (2023) It’s Personal: An Analysis of Personality and Psychological Stress in Australian Hospital Employees. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
This study examines the effect that personality has on Psychological Stress and how this contributed to these experiences through COVID within the hospital environment. Currently, medical error accounts for more than 50,000 deaths or permanent disabilities each year in Australia alone. Using the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia data, archival data was used to examine how the dynamic of personality and Psychological Stress interact in a hospital setting. With moderation analysis, the moderation effect of Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Emotional stability on the direct effect of Work hours on Psychological Stress is examined from a sample of 477 employees within the hospital setting. Furthermore, an analysis is conducted on the effects of COVID on Psychological Stress and whether Conscientiousness moderates this relationship. It was hypothesised that all personality factors would correlate with each other, and furthermore, that each would have a moderation effect. It is found that all variables are correlated and that each has a moderation effect to varying degrees on the direct effect of Work Hours on Psychological Stress. It was also found that COVID does have a direct effect on Psychological Stress, with Conscientiousness moderating this effect. The findings support the notion that personality does impact an individual’s experiences of Psychological Stress in the hospital setting, however, the study does note several non-significant findings. These were attributed to the need for further research to focus on the Facet level rather than the Trait level of personality constructs. Thus, it was concluded that personality constructs at the facet level may be a target for future interventions surrounding coping strategies and employee selection.
