Abstract
A substantial body of empirical employment-related research indicates that working environments can positively impact on employee wellbeing, fostering a sense of belonging, growth and development. However, working environments can also impact negatively on employee’s physical and mental health, sometimes resulting in increased substance abuse and exacerbation of mental health issues and suicidal behaviours. Workrelated suicide is a complex phenomenon comprising a mixture of individual psychological vulnerabilities and external work-related factors that can influence an individual to intentionally take their own life. Work-related suicide places a substantial burden on individuals, employers and communities in terms of emotional, economic and health care costs. Given the above, synthesizing research related to work-related suicide is needed to ensure that workplace health and wellbeing programs focusing on suicide prevention are evidence-based. This study used a scoping review methodology to explore the key concepts and existent empirical evidence relating to work-related suicide in order to gain a better understanding of how work environments may contribute to suicidal behaviours. Using the Arksey and O’Malley framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses reporting guidelines extended for scoping reviews, this study identified seven key work-related psychosocial risk factors for suicidal behaviour supported by empirical evidence. These were job demands, job control, job support, insecure employment, nonstandard work patterns, organisational justice and work victimisation. job demands, job control, job support, insecure employment, nonstandard work patterns, organisational justice and work victimisation. Moreover, this study identified limitations and gaps in the current literature and provided recommendation for future research.
