Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between Body Image (BI), Disordered Eating (DE) and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) in an international sample of 106 female adults. There has been limited research regarding the relationship between BI and NSSI specifically, and there has been no longitudinal research of this relationship within adult female populations identified. It was hypothesised that BI at Time 1 would predict NSSI engagement one year later at Time 2. The study also examined if BI and purging would predict greater numbers of NSSI methods engaged in. In response to a gap in the literature, DE and BI as predictors of NSSI were examined. Participants completed an online survey at Time 1 and again 12 months later (Time 2), including: a demographic section; The Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI; Gratz, 2001) and the Bulimia Test Revised (BULIT-R; Thelen, Mintz, & Vander, 1996). Results confirmed the hypothesis that BI at Time 1 significantly predicted NSSI engagement at Time 2. The hypothesis that BI and purging would predict greater number of NSSI methods was partially supported, with only BI a significant predictor of number of NSSI methods. This result contradicted other findings in the literature, so further investigation is warranted. Examination of BI and DE’s unique contribution to NSSI engagement revealed that BI was the only significant predictor of NSSI engagement at Time 2, which has implications for risk assessment and clinical practice.
