Group Interventions to Improve Adult Body Image: A Meta-Analysis

Georgeson, Sophie (2019) Group Interventions to Improve Adult Body Image: A Meta-Analysis. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

The objective of this meta-analysis was to summarise the results of group interventions to improve body image in adult populations. No meta-analyses have summarised group interventions to improve body image, or body image interventions exclusively with adults. Furthermore, few have considered body image as transdiagnostic, examinable outside the bounds of specific clinical conditions or disorders. A search of the literature identified 3002 results. After applying eligibility criteria, 20 studies were selected for inclusion. Comprehensive MetaAnalysis Version 2 was used to perform data analysis. Risk of within-study bias was appraised using the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Levels of Evidence, and publication bias across studies was assessed with Duval and Tweedie’s trim and fill analysis. Results indicated a medium significant mean effect across the studies, Hedges’ g = 0.689, however Q values indicated heterogeneity among effect sizes. Heterogeneity was not explained by the type of therapeutic approach (cognitive behavioural therapy or other), patient type (clinical versus nonclinical), or the manualisation of treatment delivery. The difference between the mean effect size for group treatment and previous findings of effect size for individual treatments was contrary to previous findings, and suggested group treatment for body image in adults could have certain advantages over individual treatment. Heterogeneity among included studies was consistent with the literature and highlighted a need for clarity in body image as a construct, and its application in body image instruments.
