Gotting, Geraldine C. (2016) Testing the Career Construction Theory on a Sample of Workers in the Northern Territory. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
At present, flexibility and career adaptability are important characteristics for the development and maintenance of an individual's career. Using the Career Construction Theory (CCT) as a theoretical framework, the present study focuses on the career adaptability model within the CCT, which outlines four key dimensions of career adaptability: adaptivity (dispositional characteristics), adapt-abilities (psychosocial resources), adapting (career-related behaviour), and adaptation (career success, satisfaction, or development). This study tested this model by exploring relationships among the four dimensions using the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS), the Committed Action Questionnaire (CAQ), and the Work and Meaning Inventory (WAMI), as measures of adaptivity, adapt-abilities, adapting, and adaptation respectively, in a sample of 53 workers in the Northern Territory. Results from three simple regression analyses revealed that the BRS significantly predicted CAAS (R² = .28), CAAS significantly predicted CAQ (R² = .28), and CAQ significantly predicted WAMI (R² = .21). Results from a standard multiple regression analysis indicated that, together, scores on the BRS, CAAS, and CAQ accounted for approximately 24% of the variance in scores on the WAMI and the model was significant. Results are discussed in relation to their practical implications.
