Graham, Chris J. (2006) Calibration in Sport: The Role of Feedback, Age and Gender. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Making probability judgements is a part of everyday life. However even when decisions based on these judgements carry serious consequences there is a large body of research which shows that people tend to be overconfident. Despite a wealth of research in the cognitive domain, very little is known about the accuracy of ability judgements in sport. Two experiments are reported here that replicate and extend previous sport calibration research by investigating the role of feedback and the effects of age and gender. A total of 137 junior golfers gave estimates of their ability on putting, chipping and pitching tasks before completing the physical tests. The estimates and scores were later analysed. The golfers in Experiment 1 were well calibrated on putting and the more difficult chipping task. There was evidence that players who were initially poorly calibrated used feedback from earlier trials to adjust their estimates to become better calibrated. Experiment 2 found golfers were overconfident on chipping and a more difficult pitching task. Once again there was some evidence of poorly calibrated golfers adjusting their estimates to become better calibrated. Female golfers gave lower estimates of ability and also scored lower than males. The effects of age were equivocal. The results are discussed in terms of implications for athlete practice habits and female participation in traditionally male dominated sports.
