Verbal Discrepancy Analysis: Updating the Technology

Abstract

Verbal discrepancy analysis is used to identify the discrepancy between how individuals with brain impairment perform on verbal fluency or naming tasks compared to individuals who do not have brain impairment. Discrepancy analysis permits a better understanding of the implication of a low score on a vulnerable measure, in the context of similar but more resistant tasks. Clinical assessment often requires the comparison of obtained scores against predicted scores, with demographic-based regression equations and discrepancy analysis aiming to improve the detection and quantification of impairment, by providing an individualised comparison standard for a clients current level of functioning. In the present study, a combined total sample of 1,622 participants free from neurological or psychological disorders were used to generate Australian normative data for the National Adult Reading Test (NART), Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT), Semantic Fluency (Animal Naming) and Boston Naming Test (BNT). Resultant demographic-based regression equations and verbal discrepancies were generated: NART predicting COWAT verbal fluency; NART predicting Animal Naming verbal fluency, and NART predicting BNT naming performance. It is anticipated that the data from the present samples can be used as conventional normative data and resultant discrepancy formulae for verbal fluency and naming performance measures to be used in Australian clinical practice, by Australian clinicians.
