Abstract

This study examined the effects of gender and type of sport on career decision-making ability and athletic identity. Albion and Fogarty’s (2003) evaluation of the Athlete Career and Education (ACE) program is a five-year longitudinal study that began in 2003. Their research formed the basis on which the present study was built. Eight hundred and seventy nine athletes completed the ACE survey (53.1% female, 46.9% male). Forty-eight sports were represented giving a mix of both team and individual athletes. The measures included the Career Decision Difficulties Questionnaire (CDDQ) and the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS). Similar to previous research, the results of this study showed significant links between gender, type of sport played, and responses to the CDDQ. This investigation identified that male team players have a lack of knowledge when it comes to alternative occupations. Provisional conclusions are illustrated concerning the factors that have influenced career decision-making among elite Australian athletes and possible future research.
