Abstract
Using a non-clinical sample of 121 student and community participants and an online survey, this study explored the viability of integrating the concept of psychological flexibility from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with the career adaptability model from Career Construction Theory (CCT). The career adaptability model proposes that an individual needs an adaptive disposition (adaptivity), which facilitates the acquisition of psychosocial resources or strengths (adapt-abilities), which lead to effective actions (adapting), resulting in positive career-related outcomes (adaptation). Several measures of ACT core processes, including the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), the Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS), and the Valued Living Questionnaire (VLQ), were used to measure individual career adaptivity traits, whilst the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS), the Committed Action Questionnaire (CAQ), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) operationalised adaptability resources, adapting, and adaptation, respectively. Multiple regression analyses generally supported the career adaptability model. Together, scores on the AAQ-II, MAAS, and VLQ significantly predicted CAAS scores. After accounting for scores on the AAQ-II, MAAS, and VLQ, CAAS significantly predicted CAQ scores. However, after accounting for AAQ-II, MAAS, VLQ, and CAAS, CAQ scores did not make a significant contribution to the prediction of SWLS scores. The results provide some initial support for the integration of ACT variables into the career adaptability model.
